It won’t be wrong to say that for those of us who could afford the internet, as a macro-world beyond our domestic worlds, was always abuzz with some activity or another trend that required our keen attention.
And since a billion minds are collectively at work on social media, like mad scientists working to create something outlandish in a lab, the result was almost always whacky.
We loved some, hated some, but couldn’t ignore any. Here are some social media trends that took limelight in 2020…
DALGONA COFFEE
The trendiest thing during this lockdown is making Dalgona coffee. We Indians were excited when our age-old style of drinking coffee come back with a renovation as a fashionable Western concept.
In April through May, our Instagram feeds were brimming with pictures of Dalgonas, every consecutive post an aesthetic picture of milk topped with whipped swirls of coffee.
Earlier during the beginning of lockdown, everyone was energised so making new dishes. As the year closes, everyone has got lazier, more tired and bored from everyday’s changing trends.
MAKING TIKTOK VIDEOS TILL IT GOT BANNED
It was a craze in everyone during this lockdown, getting ready at home, making TikTok videos, editing and uploading those videos, getting many likes and followers.
The content that goes viral on TikTok isn’t all that different from what worked back in the early days of social media.
It is also about the algorithm (love it or hate it) that gives anyone the opportunity to become ‘A Famous Tiktoker’.
BLACK & WHITE #ChallengeAccepted TREND
It is a trend of social media trends to start off as something and end up as something else.
In July, women across the world began posting the black and white pictures with the #ChallengeAccpeted and tagging their friends to do the same.
Over in India too B-town actresses like Sara Ali Khan, Sonam Kapoor and Bhoomi Pednekar took part in this challenge.
PLAYING LUDO TREND
This board game came back with a huge number of players/lovers worldwide through the digital app Ludo King that already existed but due to our fast lives it was not our priority.
Everyone including family, friends, long-lost buddies, crushes made up the strangest of combinations, bringing the world a little bit closer than usual.
It was the craze for just five to six months and after that we returned back to our previous routines like scrolling Facebook feeds, texting on WhatsApp and all that.
By the end of this year, this inertia has been slow and now everyone comes back to their previous busy lives as before the pandemic.
But all our routine and memories during lockdown can’t be forgotten.
We looked back at pictures of ourselves partying at home only, holidaying, celebrating our birthdays virtually with our friends and family. Hope 2021 will be a year full of life!
